Air Travel Security:  Info You Now Need to Give the Government

Under its Secure Flight program, the US Government is taking over the matching of names to terrorist Watch and No-Fly lists, and is requiring all air travelers to provide more information before flying.  The purposes are both to enhance security and reduce "false positives," or mistakenly identifying legitimate travelers as persons on one of the various Watch or No-Fly lists.  Once up and running effectively, Secure Flight should make for a safer, far less frequently disrupted or hassled travel experience for travelers generally.  As of August 15, 2009, travelers on domestic US flights will be required to provide their full names, including any middle name, date of birth, gender, and traveler redress number (given to travelers erroneously swept up into one of the lists previously).  As of October 31, 2009, the same will be required for international flights.  If your travel distributor or agent, or airline, does not have the data places available for you to provide that information by these dates, don't be concerned.  While your very small chances of being selected for secondary screening may stay as they are now, and not be reduced further, there should be no other consequences beyond that potential inconvenience.
